The number of people suffering from Parkinson’s disease in Western countries is steadily increasing due to aging of population. They increase form 0.6% in 65 years old people to 2.6% at the age of 85. Long standing and intensive research in the mechanisms underlying the disorder give rise to a large number of publications in scientific journals. They have greatly enhanced our knowledge of aspects of the cause and development of the disease, and provided a number of relevant concepts in the field. Large scale, international studies are regularly been published about the pharmacological treatment of different aspects of the disease providing rational means to decide, which treatment is best suited to help patients in the different stages of the disorder.
However, only very few data on other aspects of treatment and management of patients with Parkinson’s disease are available so far.
For this reason the Jacques and Gloria Gossweiler Foundation has opened a funding opportunity for high quality research on non-pharmacological treatment of symptoms experienced by patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Researchers working on studies examining the effects of physical activity, physiotherapy, ergo therapy, and speech therapy as well as on psychological and spiritual approaches, shall be supported. Both small, short-term exploratory studies and more advanced, long-term projects will be supported. Projects submitted by researchers in training will also be supported.
